HIgh Summer

I spend much of the year looking forward to summer. It must be the light and warmth and lushness. I went for a gentle run today through the summer grasses; tall and frowsy, frondy and flexible in the wind. Blackberries were beginning to swell and darken. Soon the spiders will string their webs. Summer hasn't tipped over yet into seed; it is still rising but the cow parsley flowers of May have long fallen and I think the swifts have gone.
I thought about my children and how they are growing. How someone said being a parent is a long process of gradually letting them go. How we start with the umbilical cord, then those toddler reins and then a long, fine cord that stretches across streets and towns until they are loosed into the sky like pigeons ...
